yesterday (October 28, 2025), the OpenIndiana Hipster 2025.10 snapshot was released. scrolling through the "Notable changes" list, I saw something fun:

SunRay Maintenance work and improvements. (It’s still a popular way to run Desktops for Families)

looking at the Git diff of the Sun Ray page of the OpenIndiana docs, the installation process of SRSS has been massively simplified - with the required patches now included in an OI package (with an included script for applying them all!).

at some point in the near future I'll try a fresh install of SRSS on the new OI release - since I'm in the middle of reworking a bunch of my home infra anyway, this isn't half bad timing!

huge props to the OpenIndiana team for making this easier - I'm glad it seems I'm far from the only one still actively using the Sun Rays :)

as an aside: i have a few other fun blog posts in the pipeline (some of which are illumos / Sun Ray related, some of which are... entirely different, but in similarly insane ways) - hopefully I'll finish writing some of those soon! :P
